Firefighters making progress on Utah’s 6 wildfires as heatwave approaches

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, June 13, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews are still fighting six Utah wildfires on Sunday, with some increases in acreage, but we have no new starts, and southwest Utah’s Mammoth Fire is about to drop off the radar due to being mostly contained.

That’s the news from Utah Fire Info as much of the state heads into a triple-digit heatwave.

Here’s the Sunday roundup of fires and updates, with changes noted in parenthesis.

East Canyon Fire

  • Start date: June 8
  • Acreage: 835
  • Percent contained: 45
  • Cause: Human/heavy equipment

“Evacuations have been lifted and SR-66 now open,” Utah Fire Info’s page says.

Broad Canyon Fire

Start date: July 11

  • Acreage: 97
  • Percent contained: 20 (up from zero)
  • Cause: Under investigation

The Bear Fire is currently mapped at 10,526 acres and is 10% contained,” says a Utah Fire Info tweet issued Sunday morning. “A #RedFlagWarning is in effect for the fire area today.”

Crews continue to secure the perimeter of the #BroadCanyonFire,” says a Utah Fire Info tweet issued after noon Sunday. “The fire remains at 20% containment. High winds are predicted over the fire area today that will test the fire line. #blmdo

Bennion Creek Fire

  • Start date: June 4
  • Acreage: 6,500 (118 more acres)
  • Percent contained: 10
  • Cause: Natural

“Currently burning in steep, rugged, rocky terrain in timber, sage, mountain mahogany, pinyon pine and juniper, being pushed by winds and extremely dry conditions,” a Utah Fire Info description says.

Bear Fire

  • Start date: June 8
  • Acreage: 10, 526 (726 more acres)
  • Percent contained: 10 (up from 5 percent)
  • Cause: Under investigation

The Bear Fire is currently mapped at 10,526 acres and is 10% contained,” says a Utah Fire Info tweet issued Sunday morning. “A #RedFlagWarning is in effect for the fire area today.”

The Bear Fire is burning approximately three miles northwest of Helper, says information at Utah Fire Info’s website. California Interagency Incident Management Team 10 is in command of the fire.

Pack Creek Fire

  • Start date: June 9
  • Acreage: 5,424 (260 more acres)
  • Percent contained: 6
  • Cause: Human/abandoned campfire

Mammoth Fire

  • Start date: June 5
  • Acreage: 709
  • Percent contained: 72 (up 26 percent)
  • Cause: Lightning
