SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 20, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints now allows its missionaries to wear sunglasses and hats for sun protection, but choices must be classy, not flashy.

The fashion goal, according to lds.org, is to maintain a conservative look.

“In addition to sunscreen, you may wear conservative, wide-brimmed hats to help protect you from the sun,” says a directive in the frequently asked question section of the missionary dress portion of the website.

“A hat with at least a three-inch surrounding brim usually offers necessary protection to your face and neck. Avoid bright-colored hats or hats that are too casual or that may distract from your message. Baseball, cowboy, bucket, newsboy, and fedora hats are not acceptable. Do not wear hats indoors.”

There are similar guidelines for sunglasses.

“You may wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from overexposure to the sun,” the site says. “Sunglasses must look professional and not draw undue attention. Do not wear sunglasses with bright-colored rims or mirrored lenses.

“Unless there is a medical need for keeping them on, remove your sunglasses when you speak with others or when you are indoors.”

The sister missionaries accessories section offers pictures of choices acceptable for women.

  1. It’s about time! My poor son is serving in Phoenix, AZ. Imagine walking around in that kind of sun with no protection. This change is beneficial to the health of our missionaries! Should have been instigated long ago.
