LOGAN, UTAH – May 16, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A 68 year old Smithfield man has died after crashing his vehicle through a fence and being impaled by a post.

According to Captian Tyson Budge, Logan City Police, David Ottley, from Smithfield was travelling north into Logan City on U.S. 89-91 when he left the north bound travel lane, crossing over south bound lanes and leaving the roadway.

The vehicle vaulted through a fence and landed in a field. “The fence post went through the front end of the vehicle and into the drivers side of the vehicle. impaling the driver,” said Budge.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation but witnesses stated the vehicle left the roadway with no braking or evasive actions. “We cannot determine the cause of death at this time because it appears the Mr. Ottley was already unconscious when his vehicle left the roadway,” said Budge.

Based on the witnesses, Mr. Ottley may have suffered some sort of medical emergency or fell asleep prior to the accident.

The actual cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

No other vehicles were involved.
