SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 17, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been arrested after shots were fired in Salt Lake City Tuesday morning.

A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court of Salt Lake County said David Barnett, 34, is facing charges of:

  • Theft of a firearm, a second-degree felony
  • Felony discharge of a firearm in direction of a vehicle, a third-degree felony
  • Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor

The suspect was observed getting out of a vehicle in the area of 300 S. West Temple, the statement said.

“Once he got out of the back seat of the vehicle, he produced a firearm and shot approximately seven time towards the vehicle,” the statement said. “A/P (accused person) threw the gun into a nearby garbage can. Witnesses observed A/P run into an apartment at the American Towers.”

Barnett was taken into custody; the gun was found, seized and confirmed to be a stolen firearm.

“Post Miranda, A/P admitted that the gun was possibly stolen and admitted that he threw it in the garbage can because he did not know where the gun had been,” the statement said. “A/P also admitted that he shot at the vehicle and stated that he meant to shoot the driver’s side back door and purposely did not shoot the driver. A/P admitted that they had been drinking and doing cocaine all night and he was still intoxicated.”

Barnett is currently on probation from a weapons offense in 2018. He allegedly told officials that he fled to California after his 2018 weapons case and only came back recently.

He also allegedly admitted that he has other firearms at his residence.

Barnett was transported to Salt Lake County Jail, where he was subsequently ordered to be released with conditions.
