Deputy Travis Keel, Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office, said just before 7 a.m. they received a call that a man had driven off the side of the cliff. “Witnesses indicated they believe he was blinded by the sun because they were having the same issue,” said Keel. “They said they and the victim were both hugging the shoulder of the highway to avoid the glare when the victim went off the side of the road.”

Gephardt Daily crews who are on scene said the part of the roadway where the victim went off the side is a steep upwards incline before it suddenly shifts downhill. The man was just about 100 yards from the top of the incline when the accident happened.

Deputies indicated the man, identified as 50-year-old Lewis Davis of Taylorsville, UT., died shortly after EMS crews arrived on scene.

Keel said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The roads will continue to be shut down in either direction until they are able to retrieve the vehicle.
