SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 6, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A man shot by a police officer during a Salt Lake City SWAT action has been released from the hospital and booked into jail.
Lawrence Lute Vigil, 37, was in a residence at 49 S. 800 East just after midnight on Friday when police tried to serve a search warrant, his arrest document says.
After Salt Lake City Police officers surrounded the building and breached the front door, Vigil attempted to “bail out the window, but jumped back inside,” the court document says.
“According to initial statements, (Vigil) could be seen holding something in his hand. This object was described a small, black object, consistent with the color of a handgun.”
An officer “at the rear saw this and fired at (Vigil), striking him at least once,” the arrest document says.
An Officer-Involved Critical Incident investigation is being conducted by Unified Police.
The arrest document says that on Saturday, Vigil was interviewed, and, post Miranda, “admitted to being in possession of the pistol. (Vigil) said he’d gone to the window with the intention of discarding it before police made entry.”
Vigil has been jailed for investigation of:
- Assault on a peace officer with use of a dangerous weapon, a second-degree felony
- Prohibited dangerous weapon conduct by a restricted person, a third-degree felony
- Obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony
Vigil is being held without bail.
