OGDEN, Utah, Jan. 26, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters in Ogden are still on the scene of a smoldering 22nd Street blaze, hours after it engulfed a five-story apartment complex that was under construction, and damaged a vacant building nearby.
The intense fire, which broke out between Grant and Lincoln Avenues, was first reported about 4:39 p.m. Saturday.
The spectacle was seen for miles, as it sent columns of smoke and flames spiraling into the air. The unnerving vision was captured on camera and shared by countless witnesses, who posted images of the inferno on social media.
As of 10 p.m. Saturday, more than 2,750 Rocky Mountain Power customers were without electricity, the result of a high-tension line being shut down when it began to burn, posing a danger to firefighters, according to Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Mike Slater.
In an early evening press conference, Slater told reporters the building that burned was just south of their department’s main fire station, and said crews “were on the scene immediately.”
The cause of the blaze, he said, had yet to be determined.

Slater said despite high winds, which were buffeting the region when the blaze broke out, the fire was contained to the immediate area, and crews were continuing to assess for any potential damages as the evening wore on.
Firefighters were expected to remain on scene throughout the night, Slater said.
Crews from Riverdale, South Ogden, Roy, and the Weber Fire District joined in Ogden’s firefighting efforts.
