OREM, Utah, Jan. 2, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating a fatal accident involving a FrontRunner train in Orem Wednesday morning.

Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky told Gephardt Daily the incident occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. when a man appeared to have accidentally stepped in front of a northbound train from Provo as it pulled into the station at 1350 W. 900 South.

The man was crossing in the designated area at the south end of the station. Arky said it’s not clear what the man was distracted by.

The man’s identity was being withheld pending notification of family members.

Arky said the incident is a reminder to all those that ride UTA trains to be alert and aware.

“We make crossing at a platform as safe as it can be, but in this case you have someone who apparently walked right out into the path of a moving train, with tragic consequences,” Arky said.

He said there is likely to be a slight delay on northbound FrontRunner trains from Orem to Salt Lake Central, but that there are double tracks in the area of the incident so delays will be minimal.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
