SANDY, Utah, Feb. 4, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Watchful neighbors and a quick response from Sandy City Fire Department may have saved a home from going up in flames Sunday night when a fire broke out in the attic.

SCFD Capt. Ryan Lessner said neighbors made the call reporting a structure fire, and when firefighters arrived at the home at 10261 S. Locksley Road, smoke and flames were coming through the roof.

“Crews made a quick attack and identified that the fire was in the attic,” Lessner said.

They got the fire under control through the attic, then went inside and did a primary search of the structure. No people or pets were inside.

In the meantime, the owner of the home was contacted.

“It sounds like the home was unoccupied at this point,” Lessner said. “It sounds like they were doing some renovations.”

He said investigators would be on scene to determine exactly what caused the fire.

Lessner estimated damage at $50,000, caused by the fire in the attic and some fire and water damage to the second floor.

Crews were on scene in just a couple of minutes and were able to do a “quick knockdown,” Lessner said, adding that everyone should make sure they have working smoke detectors, and if you see any indication of a fire, call 911 immediately, as the neighbors on Locksley Road did.
