SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 19, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police have arrested an 18-year-old man following a shooting on Redwood Road Sunday night.

A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court of Salt Lake County said Beni Vai Hautau, 18, is facing a charge of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony. Hautau was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning and transported to Salt Lake County Jail with his bail set at $15,000.

The incident occurred in the area of 996 S. Redwood Road just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

The statement said a verbal argument started between the victim and another individual over a stolen vehicle.

“During the argument, A/P (accused person) walked up behind victim and shot him in the right hand/wrist and also in the hip,” the statement said. “There were witnesses to the incident that knew A/P only by the name of Beni. Witnesses checked Facebook and located A/P and were able to obtain his last name.”

The witnesses were able to positively identify Hautau as the shooter by photos on Facebook.

“After the shooting, A/P fled the scene and was not located that night by police,” the statement said. “This morning dispatch received a phone call stating the shooter was back at 996 S. Redwood Road, wearing a white jersey with numbers on the back.”

Prior to arriving on the call, the arresting officer found a photo of Hautau. That officer then arrived at the Redwood Road address and and located Hautau standing in the parking lot. He was taken into custody without incident.

The victim’s gunshot wounds were not life-threatening, officials said.
