Suspect Stabs Two Near Homeless Shelter; Flees With Kids in Car

SO# 367683 mugSALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – July 13, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Salt Lake City Police Department said two males got into an altercation near 200 South and Rio Grande Street, last night at 9:30 p.m. During the altercation one of the men was stabbed in the stomach. The suspect then attempted to flee the area with several bystanders in pursuit. The suspect then turned and stabbed one of the pursuers in the stomach. The suspect then fled in a black Impala.

Officers located the suspect in his vehicle at 400 S. 1000 W. and took him into custody. Police booked Jovonie Cabrera, 24, into jail for two counts of aggravated assault. The two victims were transported to a hospital in serious condition.

According to the police report, Cabrera told police he was involved in a drug deal gone bad, when one of the victims refused to give him $20 worth of spice. He said he stabbed the first victim in the stomach after he was punched in the face. He was punched for a second time after bystanders attempted to detain him. After stabbing the second victim in the stomach, Cabrera fled the scene with two children, aged five and six, in his vehicle. He also nearly hit several other vehicles when he was trying to get away.
