SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 12, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 3-year-old child is in the hospital after a pleasant outing with her family took a terrible twist late Tuesday night.

Lt. Dave Cracroft, Salt Lake City Police Department, said the family was leaving the Utah state fairgrounds, 300 N. 1100 West, at 10:45 p.m.

“The toddler was running, and her parents yelled at her to stop,” Cracroft said. “She stopped for a second, then started running again. And she ran right in front of a pickup truck.”

Cracroft said the little girl, who just turned 3 on Tuesday, was transported in serious condition to Primary Children’s Hospital, where she was placed in the Intensive Care Unit.

The driver of the pickup truck will not be cited.

“He was really shaken — well, you can imagine. And there was no indication of speed, no sign of alcohol or any other impairment,” Cracroft said.

Of the little girl, Cracroft expressed hope for a good outcome, saying, “They’re watching her in the ICU. With an adult, you might be less positive, but kids are pretty resilient.”

Gephardt Daily will update this story as additional information is made available.
