KAYSVILLE, March 16, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper who had heard an earlier alert to watch for a car driving slowly on its rim said he noticed a scraping sound early Sunday morning, and saw the car slowly pass by on Interstate 15.
“I heard a car emitting a grinding noise as it passed by our scene,” said a UHP trooper who was assisting another officer at a DUI scene.
“I observed the gray Nissan Altima slowly pass us, driving on its rim. The front driver side tire was completely gone and the vehicle only had a rim on that side. I caught up to the vehicle and stopped it just prior to Antelope on I-15 northbound.
“Dispatch advised that Layton had earlier received a call for a wrong-way driver that was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Hill Field Road in Layton, near the railroad tracks.”
The earlier caller had said the Nissan’s driver was a female, that the vehicle appeared to have damage to the front driver’s side, and that he was nearly hit head on, say arrest documents for Angelina Del Socorro Rodriguez Fierro.
The trooper made contact with Fierro, 24, who was alone in the car.
“I was able to smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath in an open air environment,” the trooper’s account says.
“Her speech also appeared to be slow and slurred. Her balance was also poor as she was swaying as she was standing. She had relaxed facial features and her eyes also appeared to be glossy and bloodshot.
“The subject explained that she had been drinking an hour prior.”
Fierro did poorly on a standardized test and breath test, and was placed under arrest.
A search of the vehicle turned up a THC vape pen (with no medical marijuana card), two open containers, a beer and a bottle of vodka that was about three quarters empty, the arrest document says.
It was determined that Fierro has no driver license.
Fierro was later taken to the UHP Section 3 office, where she submitted to a breath test, with results to be determined.
She was arrested for investigation of alleged:
- Driving under the influence – wrong way on highway, a class A misdemeanor
- Possession of controlled substances – marijuana, a class B misdemeanor
- Open container/drinking alcohol in a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor
- No valid license, never obtained, an infraction
- Unsafe vehicle/faulty equipment, an infraction
- Wrong way on one way street, an infraction
Fierro was later released on conditions including she return for scheduled court dates.
