SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, July 7, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A rollover on Interstate 80 sent three people to the hospital, including a Utah Highway Patrol trooper who was investigating an earlier crash in the area.

According to a UHP news release, the traffic-stopping incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. at mile marker 137, when a westbound truck carrying a trailer rolled and went over the top of the trooper’s vehicle, which was in the left-hand westbound travel lane.

The truck’s driver was ejected and was transported to an area hospital by medical helicopter.

An individual who had been in the earlier crash at that location was in the trooper’s vehicle when the truck and trailer rolled over it and had to be extricated from the crushed UHP vehicle by fire department crews. That person reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries.

The trooper involved in the accident was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated for injuries.

Three westbound lanes of I-80 were closed while the injured parties were being transported and the scene was investigated. The flow of Sunday night traffic was slow and tedious, as vehicles were intermittently allowed to travel through the area.

The Utah Department of Transportation initially estimated that the road would be cleared at about 9:30 p.m. That time was quickly extended to 11:30 p.m., and later to 1 a.m. Monday.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this story as information becomes available.
