WOODS CROSS, Utah, Feb. 25, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters continuing to battle a stubborn mulch and slash pile fire in Woods Cross that began late Monday and continued burning Tuesday, sending smoke into nearby neighborhoods and affecting visibility on surrounding roads.

South Davis Metro Fire crews were dispatched at 10:43 p.m. Monday to a smoke investigation near 500 South and Redwood Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a large mulch pile burning at a landscaping yard and upgraded the response to a full assignment, according to the South Davis Fire Department.

The fire, located at 1550 West 500 South, proved difficult to extinguish due to its deep-seated origin and a mix of light, moderate and heavy timber within the slash pile, officials said. Crews remained on scene Tuesday and are expected to continue working “for the foreseeable future” to fully contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the yard.

Firefighters are working in collaboration with multiple agencies and the business at the site. Layton City Fire and Farmington Fire assisted in the response.

Because of ongoing firefighting operations and changing weather conditions, smoke has been affecting the surrounding area. Fire officials said smoke may impact driving conditions along 500 South and Legacy Highway, and some nearby neighborhoods may also experience smoky conditions.

Authorities advised drivers to avoid the area if possible. Residents with health conditions are urged to stay indoors.

Officials said there is no additional threat to the public.
