SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 23, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly struck a bicyclist in a fatal hit-and-run accident Tuesday night.

Salt Lake City Police Department said in a tweet Wednesday evening: “Thanks to the hard work of our CAR team, Sotero Valerio, 36, was booked into jail for crimes related to the hit-and-run involving victim Tot Nguyen. We are thankful for the hard work the detectives put in to make an arrest in this case.”

Nguyen, 72, died from his injuries, the SLCPD confirmed Wednesday morning.

Nguyen was crossing 400 South near 1033 West about 6 p.m. when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle, according to Salt Lake City police. The car continued without stopping, police stated.

Officials released a file photo of a white Nissan like one believed to have been seen leaving the scene. They asked the public to keep an eye out for a similar car with front-end damage.

Police said the area where the cyclist was hit was dark and it’s unclear whether Nguyen was wearing reflective clothing.

It wasn’t immediately clear where Valero was located.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
