WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, July 24, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews rescued five dogs from an apartment fire in West Valley City Sunday afternoon.
Fire crews were called to Hidden Pointe Apartments at 3854 W. Rockwood Way (3390 South) at approximately 2:30 p.m. to a fire on the second floor.
Jeff Fox, fire chief, West Valley Fire Department, said: “Crews got a 911 call for an apartment fire. The details were that we had was that there was smoke coming out of the windows. Crews knocked on the door but nobody would answer, they could hear dogs barking inside, but after a while the dogs quit barking.
“Upon our arrival we did have smoke coming out of one of the second floor windows. The crews entered the home and put the fire out pretty quickly. lt was mostly just food on the stove, and it burned some of the cabinets.”
Crews rescued five dogs and a number of lizards. A cat missing, but nobody was home and crews have not been able reach the owners yet.
Fox said of the pets: “They did have some smoke inhalation, but they’re doing OK now.”
He said the smoke alarm did go off, and one of the neighbors heard it and went to the apartment.
“Had they not heard that it could have been a pretty extensive fire damage, but because they did hear it there was just a lot of smoke damage,” Fox added.
Fox estimated there was approximately $5,000 to $10,000 worth of damage to the apartment.
