GOMBE, Nigeria, July 16 (UPI) — Two explosions at a market in Nigeria’s eastern city of Gombe killed at least 30 people and injured 44 others, witnesses said Thursday.

The explosions detonated the crowded market at people shopped in preparation for Eid-al-Fitr celebrations at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

“I saw rescue workers and security agents mobilizing to evacuate the dead and injured,” witness Ali Chiroma told Bloomberg.

Another witness, Mallam Ibrahim Mohammed, told Bloomberg he saw up to 50 people dead. Others told the BBC children were among those killed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, though terror group Boko Haram has a history of violence in the region.
