SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla., Oct. 2 (UPI) — Several people were injured at a luxury beachfront condo Friday after an explosion ripped through the top of the tall building, sending debris into at least one nearby hotel.

The explosion at the Chateau Beach Residences, a 33-story condo building under construction, happened about noon. The condo building is located in the city of Sunny Isles Beach, about 20 miles north of Miami.

Several people were transported to a local hospital with severe burns. Pedestrians were also injured by large chunks of concrete and glass that fell from the damaged building. It is not clear what caused the explosion.

“There was a explosion at the top of the building. We are on scene with Ocean Rescue, assisting them as they need us,” said Sunny Isles Beach Sgt. Brian Schnell.
