HARRISBURG, S.D., Sept. 30 (UPI) — A shooting a South Dakota’s Harrisburg High School left its principal with a flesh wound Wednesday. The suspected shooter, a student, was in custody.
Harrisburg High School principal Kevin Lein was in stable condition after the shooting in the morning. The school was placed on lockdown and a school bus arrived at 11 a.m. to take students to the Harrisburg Middle School, where parents were able to pick up their children.
Harrisburg, about 10 miles away from Sioux Falls, has a population of about 4,000 people.
“We just have very limited information at this time,” Sioux Falls public school system spokesperson DeeAnn Konrad told the Argus Leader. “We’ve communicated to all of our principals and staff members the information we have, which is very limited at this time.”
The Sioux Falls school district sent a message to parents alerting them of the incident.
“We are just learning of a shooting that occurred at Harrisburg High School. Sioux Falls schools are aware of this situation and we are working with police to determine the best course of action to keep our students safe,” the statement said. “A shooter is in custody. Again, this incident happened in Harrisburg. We will provide more information when it becomes available as it becomes necessary. Thank you.”
