BAOTAI , China, Jan. 29 (UPI) — Four workers were rescued from underground in China after being trapped in a mine for 36 days.
The miners were rescued Friday night as the rescue team drilled holes in the tunneland brought workers up in capsules.Twenty-nine people were trapped after the gypsum mine in China’s Shandong province collapsed on Dec. 25.
Rescue teams were able to detect the miners 656 feet underground as they began to bring the workers to the surface one by one.
Fifteen works have been rescued as of Friday with 13 still missing and one confirmed dead.
“I feel relieved and secure now. We will remember you [rescuers] forever,” one of the miners said.
Some 400 rescue and emergency workers participated in the rescue operation.
The miners were being examined at a local hospital and official Zhang Shuping said the search for the 13 miners still missing would continue.
