COLUMBIA, S.C., Feb. 17, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley plans to endorse Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for president on Wednesday, just days ahead of the state’s Republican primary.
CNN confirmed an earlier report by The State that Haley plans to announce her endorsement of Rubio on Wednesday evening.
Haley is the second major elected official in the Palmetto State to rally behind Rubio, with Rep. Trey Gowdy, S.C., hitting the campaign trail for the Florida senator in recent days.
Haley, who delivered the Republican response to this year’s State of the Union address, has one of the highest approval ratings of any governor in the United States. She is seen as a rising star within the Republican Party, and last September, she suggested she would be interested in a shot at vice president.
The endorsement comes in the home stretch just before the Republican primary in South Carolina on Saturday, with Rubio tied with Sen. Ted Cruz for second place, or just behind him, in the most recent polls.
