NEW HAVEN, Conn., July 15 (UPI) — Police in New Haven, Conn., are investigating the discovery of two severed human legs near train tracks Wednesday.

A man told police he found the legs along a fence near a railroad station — they were hidden underneath foliage about three feet thick, Officer David Hartman told the Hartford (Conn.) Courant.

It’s unclear how long the remains had been there or whether they even belong to the same person. Investigators are expected to conduct forensic testing to determine the age, gender and race of the remains.

Both legs had socks on the feet, but no shoes. They were severed at about mid-calf.

Hartman said the discovery was made in an area that had likely been used as a homeless encampment recently.

No other human remains were found in the area, and police said they were looking into reports of missing persons in the region in an effort to identify the remains.
