Man missing in La. oil rig explosion ID’d; Coast Guard suspends search

NEW ORLEANS, La., Oct. 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Coast Guard said in a news release late Monday that it has suspended the search for the man who was unaccounted for after an oil rig exploded Sunday on Lake Ponchartrain near Kenner, La.

The missing man has been identified as Timothy Morrison, 44, of Katy, Texas.

In its statement, the Coast Guard said multiple resources and assets had been used to saturate the search area.

Rescuers suspended the search Monday at 7:15 p.m. (Central Daylight Time).

The fire on the platform was extinguished Monday morning. The platform is owned by Clovelly Oil Co., according to the statement.

Coast Guard pilots reported no visible signs of pollution as they flew over the area Monday, but they will continue to monitor for any potential pollution.

Louisiana State Police HAZMAT Division is investigating the cause of the explosion.
