June 20 (UPI) — A strong storm swirling in the Caribbean has strengthened into Tropical Storm Bret, forecasters said Monday.
The storm system, which moved near the Windward Islands, Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday, continues to gather steam as it heads west-northwest, the National Hurricane Center said.
Earlier, Bret was labeled as Potential Tropical Cyclone Two as it swirled north off the coast of South America. It’s expected to move along the coastlines of Venezuela and Colombia, and be almost directly south of Haiti by Wednesday afternoon.
At 8 p.m. Monday, the storm was located about 150 miles southeast of Grenada. It’s expected to pour as many as 4 inches of rain on the islands by the end of Tuesday. By Monday night, meteorologists had measured maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.
The National Hurricane Center is also keeping an eye on Potential Tropical Cyclone Three in the central Gulf of Mexico.
