LOS ANGELES, July 14 (UPI) — A California mother found a hidden camera recording a video in a Starbucks bathroom after she and her son used the toilet.

The woman, who was not identified, said her 5-year-old son pointed out a phone propped under the sink with paper towels while in a Lancaster, Calif., Starbucks bathroom. The camera was pointing toward the toilet, she said. Deputies said it was recording video, but it was unclear how long it had been recording or who owned the phone.

“It’s such a violation of privacy,” the woman told KTLA. “Not only of mine, but my son.”

Lt. Joseph Fender with the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station said investigators were reviewing Starbucks surveillance video and the cell phone video. Starbucks officials said they are also reviewing the incident.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve seen it, but I wouldn’t call it common, “said Jaime Riley, a spokeswoman for Starbucks. “And I’m sure it’s not specific to Starbucks.”

This is the second similar incident in recent months at Starbucks. In April, employees at a Walnut Creek, Calif., Starbucks found a video camera in the bathroom positioned to record patrons using the bathroom. Jacob Turner, 34, was arrested on charges related to the illegal surveillance.
