CANDLER, N.C., Sept. 26 (UPI) — A North Carolina man attributed his recent $1 million lottery prize to the fact that he had a well-timed craving for Mountain Dew.

Candler resident Michael Owenby, a custodian for Buncombe County schools, told North Carolina Education Lottery officials he was helping a friend shop for a car when he decided to dip into an M&S Food store for a cold beverage.

Owenby said he decided to buy some scratch-off lottery tickets while in the store.

“I asked for a $5, $10, and $20 ticket,” Owenby said.

Owenby’s $20 Millionaire Bucks ticket turned out to be a $1 million winner.

“It’s amazing,” Owenby said. “It all happened because I wanted a Mountain Dew.”

Owenby, who collected a $415,506 lump sum after taxes, said he plans to use his winnings to buy a new car and save for retirement.
