SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 9, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman died before sunrise Thursday when she was in a crosswalk and was struck by an oncoming car.

At about 6:45 a.m., the woman was at 600 North and 800 West, walking south across 600 North, when she was struck by an eastbound driver who reportedly told police he never saw the victim. She was dressed in a dark color, and was struck about 45 minutes before sunrise.

“She was struck and she fell in the street,” said Lt. Mark Ross, Salt Lake City Police Department. “Fire got here and did a great job working with her, but she passed away here, at the intersection.”

Ross told Gephardt Daily it was too early to know if the driver would be charged.

“We are still looking at all the facts,” Ross said. “One thing we do know is she was dressed in black. It was dark. Vehicles travel along here at a pretty good speed.”

Ross said officer would be at the intersection for a few hours, taking photos and diagramming the scene. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.

Ross suggested pedestrians be aware of traffic, for their own protection, even if they are in a crosswalk where they have legal right of way.

“Just watch out,” he advised. “Vehicles coming your way may not see you. Just so we can avoid another tragedy like this.”

The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
