SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 5, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was taken into custody Monday after a Salt Lake City Police officer fired a gun while attempting to apprehend a suspect on Saturday.
The suspect, identified as Robert Craig Ortega, 36, was located and taken into custody Monday morning by Unified Police Department officials.
The incident happened just before 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of 1111 E. 3300 South, according to a Monday news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.
“An officer was on a call and came across Robert Ortega, which he discovered had a warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child,” the news release said. “When the officer attempted to take Ortega into custody, an altercation ensued, a Taser was used and the officer discharged his firearm.”
No one was injured as a result of the incident, officials said.
Ortega then fled the scene in a vehicle.
SLCPD Sgt. Brandon Shearer said the suspect’s vehicle was located near a residence in the area of 4100 S. 800 East in Millcreek, and police established a containment around the house. A SWAT team was called to the scene.
The suspect was not located in the home or in the back shed officials said.
Further details of Ortega’s arrest were not provided.
The SLCPD officer will be questioned regarding the incident, and the UPD will conduct an investigation in keeping with protocol.
