SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 3, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police have arrested a suspect after a stabbing which claimed the life of a Maverik store clerk overnight and critically injured a second man.

Salt Lake City Police Department tweeted at 1 p.m. Wednesday that Tukka Gonne, 21, is being booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for the homicide that occurred at 1270 S. Main St. Anyone with additional info is asked to call SLC Police Department, the tweet said.

Friends and family identified the deceased as Joey Allen, who had recently started working graveyard shifts at the gas station.

Salt Lake Police Lt. Dave Cracroft told Gephardt Daily officers were called to the Maverik at about 3:15 a.m. When police arrived, they found the store clerk who’d been stabbed to death and another man who was gravely wounded.

According to Cracroft, the stabbing took place after an altercation, but he could provide no information on what caused the fight or how many people were involved.

Two men were arrested on scene, and two others remain at large, Cracroft said.

Maverik Vice President David Hancock issued the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that Maverik had a valued member of our team killed last night at our store. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Maverik Human Resources is providing assistance to teammates who may be feeling overwhelmed, and grief counselors are available for additional help through our employee assistance program.”

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
