William Shatner’s “Twitter Funeral” For Leonard Nimoy

Spock-Leonard-NimoyCaptain James T. Kirk doesn’t believe in “no win situations.” But that is exactly where William Shatner, the famed actor who portrayed the character for three seasons of “Star Trek” on television and in seven feature films, found himself this past weekend. On Friday, Shatner’s long time co-star and good friend Leonard Nimoy passed away, leaving fans around the world mourning the loss of a legend. It was naturally assumed that Shatner would be a prominent presence at his friend’s funeral.

The problem: Shatner was already solidly committed to a be at a charity event for the Red Cross. Shatner tweeted the following:

Shatner sent his daughters, Melanie and Lisbeth, to attend the funeral in his place due to his commitment to the charity, and he tweeted comments and remembrances of his friend and co-star throughout out the day, having a “Twitter funeral” of sorts, even interacting with fans and answering their questions about Nimoy.

The New York Daily News blasted away at Shatner, calling “Captain Jerk” on their front page for his failure to “beam over” to Nimoy’s funeral.

New York’s radio host Todd Schnitt also chided Shatner in a tweet:

  1. I agree with Shatner and I bet you that Leonard would have wanted him to honor his commitment. I am sure they had said their goodbyes, when Nimoy knew (which I am sure he did) that it was close to time.
