MAGNA, Utah, March 7, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified a 5-year-old boy who died Monday morning after being run over by his grandfather’s truck in Magna.

Unified Police Det. Chuck Malm said Hunter Joseph Weiss was hit in the driveway of his grandparent’s home located at 8728 Redbud Court (3400 South) just after 8 a.m.

“He was dropped off earlier by his parents to his grandparents to babysit,” Malm said. “The little boy was outside playing when grandpa was getting ready to leave, the grandfather had told the grandson to go inside and get his coat.

“He didn’t see him when he was backing up and assumed the child had gone inside, and he essentially continued to back up and backed over his grandson.”

Malm said officers did what they could to render aid and revive Hunter, but he had already passed.

He added: “Currently we are doing what we can to support this family, we are obviously conducting an investigation and we are all reaching out to community members to help support this family. It’s an absolutely devastating situation.

“There’s no words to express how sad we are to have to do this investigation today. It appears to be a tragic accident. It’s just a reminder that as summer rolls around, as kids are becoming more active outside, please check your surroundings.”

A GoFundMe page was set up in Hunter’s name early Monday afternoon.
