IMG_4511UPDATE -SALT LAKE CITY – March 31, 2015 – A firefighter was injured while battling a house fire in Salt Lake City on Tuesday.

“Our firefighter was on the 2nd floor of the home putting out the fire where the heat was extreme,” said Jasen Asay, spokesman for Salt Lake City Fire Department.

“When he came out of the house he indicated he did not feel well and after our crews examined him it was determined he was suffering from heat exhaustion and he was transported to an area hospital.”

Fire crews worked to contain a house fire at 940 W. 400 S. Tuesday morning.

Asay said the call came in at 10:55 a.m. When crews arrived they found the occupants of the home had evacuated. There was fire both on the outside porch and inside the home.

He stated that the crews went to work on the fire, it was like fighting three fires because there was a fire on the porch, a fire on the first floor, on the second floor and in the attic.

“We quickly got the fire under control. It was a dangerous fire because when fires get up in the attic they can move quickly and something that can happen that we call a flash over where it all comes at once. We relied on our training and were able to get the fire out, and we limited the damages as much as possible,” said Asay.

Fire crews were able to respond within about four minutes due to the close location of the local fire stations in the area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and it is not known how much damage was caused.

There were no other injuries but the inhabitants of the home are now displaced and working with Red Cross to find adequate housing. The home was occupied by two adults and one child.
