EMERY COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 14, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Emery County Sheriff officials and people from the Elements wilderness group worked together to help rescue a man who had wrecked his side-by-side late Monday afternoon, and who was trapped under the vehicle.
“Dispatch was able to acquire the GPS position of the call and send help to the crash location near Calf Canyon in the San Rafael Swell,” says an Emery County Sheriff statement issued by Sheriff Tyson Huntington.
“Deputy Lake was already working in the area, and rushed to the scene. When he arrived, he found that Elements, a local wilderness group, was already helping the victim. The boys from Elements and their leaders were able to get the side-by-side off the man and start first aid.
“Deputy Lake joined them along with members of our Search and Rescue Team and law enforcement from the DNR as they arrived on scene. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene to medevac the victim to a hospital.”

The location of this accident “is very remote and does not get a lot of traffic, especially this time of year,” the ECSO statement says.
“The odds of people and an ECSO deputy being so close are not great, yet for some reason people were there and were capable of helping.
“To the Elements Wilderness Program group, I want to say you probably saved a man’s life. You selflessly worked together to serve another,” Huntington wrote.

“That is great — be proud of yourselves. Please know of my immense gratitude for your actions.
“To dispatch, thank you for your cool head and professionalism.
“To Deputy Lake, SAR Team members and DNR cops, what can I say but job well done! I am humbled by your efforts.
“To the EMTs that responded from the Huntington Ambulance Garage, thank you for your response to such a remote area and for keeping the patient comfortable and stable until the medical helicopter arrived. We appreciate your service to all of us.
“A reminder to all to please be safe and prepared when you are out recreating.”
