SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 1, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A gas leak in the Avenues forced evacuation of two homes on Monday morning.

“This morning at about 9:20 a.m. the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to reports of an outside gas leak at 687 E. 4th Ave.,” said Jasen Asay, SLCFD spokesman. “A construction crew on site was digging and reportedly hit a gas main, which caused a leak.”

Asay said his department’s crews arrived with a fire truck and a HazMat team. The later monitored the air, and identified a “hot zone, and within that hot zone there were two homes that needed to be evacuated.”

Asay said, at about 10:15 a.m., that Questar was on the scene to conduct the repairs, and the Salt Lake City Fire Department would stand by in case an accident occurred. Asay said he expected repairs to be completed by about noon.

The cause of the gas line breakage would be investigated, he said. The area was closed to traffic while repairs were being made.
