Herriman, Utah – June 16, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A home in Herriman was hit by lightning Monday evening during a massive thunderstorm.

According to David Ulibarri, spokesperson for Unified Fire Department, the call came in around 10 p.m. that a house had been hit by lightning. “When our crews arrived there was a little smoke and some flames coming from the roof. We were able to put it out fairly quickly,” said Ulibarri.

Ulibarri also said that even though they did have to evacuate everyone, the family has not been displaced.  “No one was injured, everyone was able to get out safely.”

It is actually fairly rare that your home can get hit by lightning, but not impossible. “If this ever happens to you, we ask that you account for everyone and evacuate, then call 911,” said Ulibarri. “You just never know what the strike will do. It will try to find the path of least resistance and that could cause a smoldering fire in the wall and insulation. We have the ability to use thermal imaging cameras to determine if there is further damage.”

Unified Fire Department was also assisted by Unified Police to help maintain and control onlookers and traffic.

The damage to the house is very minimal.
