Often the pain of no longer having your pet around and the uncertainty of how to deal with the grief is a common feeling among pet owners who have had to say goodbye.

Now, thanks to Professor Steven Lucero, director of wellness at USU’s School of Veterinary Medicine there is a place for those having difficulty processing the death of their beloved companion.

The program, modeled after a similar one at Washington State University, was started two weeks ago and is operated by five of their students. There have been a handful of calls they have taken to help others with support many cannot find elsewhere.

In addition to helping bereaved animal lovers, the hotline is there to help the veterinary science students, too. At some point in their career it is almost inevitable that a veterinarian must deals with client who have to make the decision to put down their animal, or may be having to deal with already having lost the animal.

The Pet Loss Hotline can be reached at: 435-757-4540, Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

For other local resources coping with pet loss, there are counselors, grief support groups and other helpful links listed at Pet-loss.net.
