SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 7, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Today, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill announced that a Third District Court judge sentenced Alexis Federico Marquez, 24, to 15 years to life for first-degree felony murder and five years to life for first-degree felony aggravated robbery.

On Aug. 11, 2022, police were called to shots fired at 11715 S. State St., Draper, a statement from the Salt Lake County DA’s Office says.

When they arrived, they found the body of Remey Rowland with gunshot wounds to his chest and face. It was later determined that he had been hit with a total of four bullets.

“Through the investigation, detectives determined that the defendant had made a plan to meet with Rowland to buy $1,350 of cocaine. When the defendant got into Rowland’s car, he only had $1,300 of motion picture production money.

“During the trial, the defendant said he got into the car with Rowland, who saw the money the defendant had with him, tried to grab the money and pointed a gun at the defendant. The defendant claimed that is why he shot Rowland several times. However, the gun the defendant claimed Rowland had pointed at him was never recovered.  After the shooting, the defendant ran back to his apartment and cleaned up. A lengthy standoff took place when police tried to take the defendant into custody for the murder.”

On Sept. 17, 2025, a Third District Court jury found the defendant guilty of one count of first-degree felony murder, one count of first-degree felony aggravated robbery, two counts of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury, and one count of second-degree felony discharge of a firearm with injury.

On Jan. 6, 2026, a Third District Court judge sentenced the defendant to 15 years to life for one count of first-degree felony murder, five years to life for one count of first-degree felony aggravated robbery, one to 15 years for each of the two counts of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury, and one to 15 years for one count of second-degree felony discharge of a firearm with injury. All the sentences are set to run concurrently to each other.

“We appreciate the sentence imposed by the judge, ensuring the defendant will spend years behind bars,” Gill said. “It sends a strong message that gun violence will not be tolerated in our community.”
