LEHI, Utah, Jan. 7, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Two people have been booked into the Utah County jail after police say they allegedly robbed a store, then ran over and critically injured an employee after he grabbed their fleeing vehicle.
Gavin Drake Huss, 22, and Riley Deborah Shelman, 21, have been arrested in the case.
Each faces a charge of failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving serious injury, a third-degree felony; and retail theft — value $500-$1,499.
Huss faces an additional charge of driving on a suspended license, a class C misdemeanor.
Chain of events
The incident happened at about 6 p.m. Jan. 2 at A Mad Mans Hobby Store, at 127 E. State, Lehi, according to arrest documents filed by the Lehi City Police Department.

“A male, identified as Gavin Huss, and a female, identified as Riley Shelman, entered the store and left the store with an electronic radio controlled (RC) car worth approximately $800 without paying,” the statements say.
Surveillance footage showed that Huss “grabs the Traxxas RC Car and Ms. Shelman holds the door open for Mr. Huss as he leaves holding the car. Mr. Huss required the use of both hands to carry the RC car,” the arrest documents state.
“After Mr. Huss and Ms. Shelman exited the store, they entered a Black Dodge Ram 1500 with tinted windows with a toolbox mounted in the truck bed. As Mr. Huss and Ms. Shelman began to leave the area in a Black Dodge Ram 1500, the *store owner attempted to confront Mr. Huss and Ms. Shelman as they were leaving the area in the truck.”
*Editor’s note: A GoFundMe page set up for the injured man said he works at the store, but is not the owner.
“As the truck was leaving the area, the store owner was pulled into the rear tire well of the vehicle as the tires were rotating, causing the store owner to be sucked into the wheel well and ran over by the truck. The store owner suffered two broken femurs, a broken tibia and a fibula in his right leg, a broken right arm near his shoulder, a broken nose, two broken eye sockets and various lacerations to forehead.”
A donations-protected GoFundMe account has been set up for Mark Willson, reported by a family member as the store employee and victim who was run over and left at the scene. As in all cases, Gephardt Daily cannot guarantee funds raised will be used as stated.
“Mr. Huss and Ms. Shelman left the scene, did not contact emergency medical services, and did not attempt to assist the store owner,” say arrest documents for Shelman and Huss.
Arrests
On Tuesday, an anonymous caller called to Lehi Police Department and identified Huss and Shelman from surveillance images of the incident posted to social media by A Mad Mans Hobby Store.
“I compared social media pictures of Mr. Huss and Ms. Shelman to the surveillance footage and positively identified Mr. Huss and Ms. Shelman as the persons in the footage,” the Lehi City PD officer wrote in arrest documents.
A vehicle registration search showed Shelman owned a black Dodge Ram 1500 that matched the description of the one involved in the victim’s injuries. The automatic license plate reader located the vehicle on Tuesday in Heber City and Park City.
The truck recorded by a surveillance camera.
Lehi City PD set up surveillance in Park City, spotted the vehicle, and conducted a felony stop, with assistance from Utah Highway Patrol. Shelman was detained. Post Miranda, she declined to be interviewed without a lawyer present.
“Ms. Shelman called Mr. Huss and advised him that she was detained by Lehi Police Department Detectives. Ms. Shelman told Mr. Huss that she ‘is not talking to them without a lawyer.’ Mr. Huss said, ‘thank you.'”
Shelman was arrested at 4:03 p.m. Tuesday, and was transported to the Utah County jail, court documents say. She was advised that Huss was being sought and was told “it is in his best interest to turn himself in, so we can avoid a high risk situation.”
Shelman was allowed to make a phone call and, at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Huss turned himself in to the Provo Police Department and was transported to the Utah County jail.
Post Miranda, “Huss advised that he originally intended to go to the store to buy a part for an RC car, which he did. He then advised that he did a walk around of the store and suddenly decided to steal the car. As he did so, Ms. Shelman opened the door for Mr. Huss. Mr. Huss got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and drove off.
“Mr. Huss advised that he noticed that the store owner was trying to get into the truck bed, and saw that the owner was hanging on to the side of the truck. Mr. Huss decided to stop the vehicle at this point, saw that the store owner was off of the vehicle, and Mr. Huss left at a high rate of speed in the Black Dodge Ram 1500.”
Both Huss and Shelman were ordered held without bail.
