Natural gas leak sparks home evacuations, shelter-in-place order for West Jordan school

WEST JORDAN, Utah, Aug. 23, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A West Jordan elementary school has students sheltering in place, and multiple homes have been evacuated as officials respond to a gas leak on Old Bingham Highway on Friday.

“We are dealing with a natural gas leak in the area of 3300 W. 8070 South,” a 9:11 a.m. tweet from the West Jordan Police Department said.

“As a result Old Bingham Highway is closed from 7800 S. to approx. 8300 S. while crews fix the leak. The line was compromised by utility equipment by accident.”

A subsequent tweet, issued at 10:34 a.m., said Old Bingham Highway remained closed between 8000 and 8600 south.

The school placed on shelter is Terra Linda Elementary, at 8400 S. Old Bingham Highway.

The West Jordan Police Department tweeted at 2:03 p.m. that some lanes of traffic on Old Bingham Highway had again opened.
