MILLCREEK, UTAH – November 2, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Police are searching for a man who is accused of scamming elderly residents in the Millcreek area over the past two months.
Police said there have been several reports of a suspicious male “casing” houses in that area. Unified Police said in a statement: “It appears this male is targeting homes with alarm signs in the yards. When confronted by homeowners, he claims to work for the alarm company on their sign and says he’s there to upgrade or repair their system. The suspect also appears to be targeting and preying on the elderly, some of whom may have signs of dementia. He has also been known to tell people he is painting addresses on the curbs.
“Unified Police Department was contacted in regard to this same individual convincing an elderly female to give him $4,800 cash to “install” an alarm system. The victim in this case is 87 years of age and does suffer from early signs of dementia. On two different occasions the suspect accompanied the victim to the bank and waited outside while she made the withdrawals. The suspect then took the money and disappeared, never having installed an alarm system.”
UPD investigators obtained surveillance footage from the bank and identified the suspect as Lanny Warren Outcalt, 33.
Unified Police Department is releasing this information with the hope of making people aware of this individual and his efforts to exploit the elderly citizens of Salt Lake County. UPD investigators would like to talk to Outcalt regarding this and other similar incidents.
