MURRAY, Utah, Aug. 14, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Power has been restored at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray following a sudden outage Thursday morning that temporarily disrupted operations at one of Utah’s largest hospitals.

According to Brian Pendleton, Chief Nursing Officer at Intermountain Medical Center, the outage occurred around 11:15 a.m. and triggered the hospital’s emergency response protocols. While backup generators initially engaged, a subsequent failure in those systems resulted in a loss of both network and electrical power across parts of the facility.

Hospital officials worked closely with Murray Fire Department and Murray City utilities to restore power. Full utility power was re-established by approximately 1 p.m. Pendleton said critical systems, including ventilators with battery backups, remained operational, and no patients were harmed as a result of the outage.

Out of the more than 500 patients in the hospital when the power was lost, 11 patients — including five newborns in incubators and six women in labor — were transferred to other local hospitals as a precaution.

Several outpatient clinics, including the Echo Outpatient Center and Medical Office Building, were temporarily closed, and appointments were canceled for the remainder of the day, Pendleton said. Elective surgeries and non-urgent procedures at the main hospital are being minimized until the cause of the outage is identified and resolved.

The cause of the initial outage and failure of the backup generator systems remains under investigation, the hospital was operating at full capacity and continuing to care for emergency and inpatient cases Thursday.
