SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 21, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — An inmate at the Utah State Prison in Salt Lake County is facing additional charges after an alleged assault on a fellow prisoner.
Omar Eduardo Vidrio, 31, is facing charges of:
- Aggravated assault with injury by a prisoner, a first-degree felony
- Obstruction of justice, capital/first-degree felony conduct, a second degree felony
According to court documents, on April 22 of this year, Vidrio was captured on surveillance footage entering the cell of an inmate identified as T.S. Vidrio had a weapon in his possession, the document says.
“Vidrio then dragged T.S. out of the cell and stabbed him with the weapon approximately 21 times in the torso and thighs while also punching and kicking him,” says the document, filed by a corrections officer.
“Officers then responded to the incident and got Vidrio to separate from T.S. Vidrio was given several orders to return to his cell, but refused and instead attempted to shove the weapon between the gaps of another inmate’s cell door.”
After capsicum spray was deployed, Vidrio “eventually returned to his cell, taking the weapon with him.”
T.S. was transported to the University of Utah Medical Center where his medical records stated there was a “…high probability of imminent or life threatening deterioration in patient’s condition due to multiple stab wounds, pneumothorax” (collapsed lung).
