Bomb on Cairo Bridge Kills Policeman, Injures Two Civilians

CairoCAIRO, April 5 (UPI) — A police officer was killed and two civilians were injured after a bomb detonated near a police booth on a bridge in one of the most secure parts of Cairo.

The blast occurred in the upmarket island district of Zamalek, making it the apparent first attack in an otherwise secure area populated by embassies, foreign residents and elite Egyptians.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but violence has increased since the overthrow of former President Mohammed Morsi, a member of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood. The explosion occurred midmorning on Sunday on one of the most heavily trafficked arteries of Cairo.

Violence and opposition suppression erupted after Morsi was ousted and replaced by current President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, former head of Egypt’s armed forces. Most violence occurred in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, where at least 15 soldiers and two civilians were killed after militants opened fire on military checkpoints Thursday.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced last week he will resume military shipments and aid to Egypt in an effort to improve relations since imposing an arms freeze in October 2013.
