Update: American Fork Canyon remains closed due to Alpine Fire

UTAH COUNTY, Utah, June 25, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — American Fork Canyon remains closed Sunday because of a fire that broke out during Saturday afternoon in the east bench area of the canyon.

State Route 92/Alpine Loop was closed in both directions, and eastbound SR 92 was closed at Park Drive, according to Utah Department of Transportation.

Loyal Clark, public information officer for the National Forest Service Northern Utah Division, said the fire, which has been named the Alpine Fire, has burned 300 acres.

Clark said officials are working on bringing resources to the area. Utah County crews are assisting, as well as Salt Lake County, and a 20-person hotshot crew has been diverted from the Shepard Fire in Farmington to American Fork. A 20-person hotshot crew from Boise, Idaho, is also on scene.

Clark said investigators have determined that the fire was caused by an abandoned campfire that escaped its rock fire ring.

No homes are being threatened, officials said.

American Fork Canyon and Timpanogos Cave will be closed Sunday while firefighters continue to fight the fire.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as information becomes available.
