DOUGLAS, Ariz., June 25 (UPI) — An Air National Guard fighter jet crashed Wednesday night during a training mission in southern Arizona, near the Mexican border.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, from the 162nd Fighter Wing, crashed about 8 p.m. local time, about five miles east of the Douglas Municipal Airport. The border town is about 230 miles southeast of Phoenix, just north of Mexico.

There was one person aboard the aircraft. The status of the pilot is not known, officials said. The initial 911 call came from a woman who said “there was an airplane on fire in her front yard,” said Carol Capas of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash sparked a brush fire in the area. U.S. Army personnel from Fort Huachuca arrived at the scene to secure the site until Air Force officials arrived.
