ALLENTOWN, Pa., Aug. 24 (UPI) — British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson died Monday after he was struck by debris from a crash at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway, auto race officials said. He was 37.

Mark Miles, the CEO of IndyCar’s parent company said Wilson sustained a head injury Sunday when a flying piece of debris from the crash struck him in the head, CNN reported.

Emergency officials air lifted Wilson to Lehigh Valley Health Network-Cedar Crest Hospital in Allentown with a traumatic head injury.

Wilson was the 12th driver to come upon a crash by race leader Sage Karam, with 21 laps left in the ABC Supply 500, the Indianapolis Star reported. As Wilson veered off to avoid the crash, he drove directly into the path of the flying debris.

Fellow driver Ryan Hunter-Reay said Wilson was “an innocent bystander.”
