Seven-Year-Old Girl Stranded in Colombian Jungle Rescued After 18 Days

SANTA MARTA, Colombia, July 14 (UPI) — A seven-year-old girl stranded in a northern Colombian jungle has been rescued after more than two weeks thanks to an anonymous call.

Jessica Patricia Arias went missing on June 27 at the Tayrona National Park. She was found suffering from moderate malnutrition and dehydration in an abandoned hut on Monday by Colombian Directorate of Traffic and Transportation officials.

Hundreds of officers participated in land and air searches. Jessica was transported via helicopter to the Fernando Troconis University Hospital in the city of Santa Marta, capital of Colombia’s Magdalena region.

Officials have not released information on how Jessica survived such extreme conditions for so long. She was found after someone made an anonymous call about the girl’s whereabouts.

“God himself helped her to survive so many days,” Elena Cortes, Jessica’s mother, said. “Thank you to God and the national police.”

Videos of Jessica’s rescue were released online.
