“The Nevada Department of Corrections reports that on July 30, 2024, an altercation broke out at Ely State Prison leaving three dead and multiple offenders injured,” according to a corrections department press release.

A total number of injured inmates wasn’t detailed beyond the three fatalities and “nine offenders transported for treatment.”

“No officers were injured,” the release said.

“The names of the deceased are not being released currently. No further information is available at this time, as it is an active investigation.”

Multiple statewide and local law enforcement agencies are involved and the Ely facility is in lockdown.

The state corrections website Tuesday night said “Attention: All visitation is closed at every facility until further notice.”

The department includes multiple facilities in the Reno and Las Vegas areas as well as Ely, which is some ten miles from the Nevada/Utah stateline.
