Another blue dress is in the news; only this time it’s Monica Lewinsky’s infamous blue dress. A portrait painted for Bill Clinton in 2006 by artist Nelson Shanks has a few subliminal messages.

After an interview with Philadelphia Daily News, Shanks admits that he incorporated references to the Monica Lewinsky scandal and a shadow that President Clinton had cast while in office.

Lewinsky was a White House intern that President Clinton admittedly had an affair with while in office. The blue dress that is referred to is a piece of evidence that was found from the investigation.

The portrait was painted in the Oval Office. There is a noticeable shadow on the left had side of the portrait. Shanks said that he placed a mannequin in a blue dress (referring to Lewinsky) to cast a shadow on the mantle while he was painting. However, Clinton was never aware because the mannequin and President were never in the room at the same time.

In the interview Shanks stated that Clinton was the hardest person to capture in a portrait. Keep in mind Shanks has painted portraits of people from Princess Diana to Pope John Paul II.

Shanks described President Clinton as “the most famous liar of all time” and the shadow in the portrait was referring to “the shadow on the office he held.”

The portrait received criticism from the Clinton’s when it was first released in 2006 due to a missing wedding ring on the president’s hand.

The portrait currently hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. according to ABC News. The portrait is not on display, but is in the gallery of collection in the museum.

A statement from Shanks said that “the Clintons hate the portrait” but he never told the president himself about the subliminal messages.
